Oscar J Michael Coppes, MD

Oscar J Michael Coppes, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist with extensive clinical, academic, and leadership experience in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Dr. Coppes earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine before completing his residency in Anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, further specializing in the evaluation and treatment of complex pain conditions.

Following his postgraduate training, Dr. Coppes returned to the University of Chicago, where he served as an Assistant Professor in Anesthesia and Pain Management. During his academic career, he contributed to patient care, physician education, and research focused on improving the management of pain and reducing the risks associated with opioid use.

Dr. Coppes later joined the Medical College of Wisconsin as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology. In addition to caring for patients with a broad range of acute and chronic pain conditions, he held several clinical, educational, and quality leadership positions. He served as Director of the Inpatient Pain Service and Patient Safety and Quality Officer for the Department of Anesthesiology, helping advance initiatives focused on patient safety, clinical quality, and effective pain management.

His leadership responsibilities also included serving as the Resident Rotation Director for Pain Management, where he helped educate and mentor physicians during their anesthesiology training. He was a member of the hospital system’s Pain Steering Committee as well as the Department of Anesthesiology Quality Steering Committee, contributing to multidisciplinary efforts to improve pain care and clinical outcomes.

Dr. Coppes has also contributed to the medical literature on pain management. His published work has addressed topics including predictors of acute postoperative pain and strategies for reducing persistent opioid use following surgery.

Throughout his career, Dr. Coppes has combined clinical practice with a strong commitment to education, patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based pain medicine. His approach to pain management emphasizes thoughtful, evidence-based care tailored to each patient, with the goal of improving function, quality of life, and overall well-being.

Dr. Coppes is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). He also serves as a board member of the Midwest Pain Society.
